If you’re targeted by a deepfake

You don’t need to solve everything at once. Your goals are: (1) stop spread, (2) save proof, (3) protect accounts, and (4) get the right people involved.

Safety note:

If you believe you’re in immediate danger or being threatened, contact local emergency services. This page is educational guidance—not legal advice.

The 6-step playbook

Act quickly, document evidence, and reduce spread. You can do these steps in any order based on urgency.

1) Capture evidence

Screenshot the post, profile, and comments. Save URLs, timestamps, usernames. Keep a simple log.

2) Don’t amplify

Don’t quote-tweet or repost. Ask close contacts not to engage publicly—report quietly instead.

3) Report to the platform

Use impersonation / harassment / non-consensual intimate imagery policies. Attach your evidence log.

4) Notify trusted allies

Employer/school, close friends, family. Ask them to redirect questions to you and not spread it.

5) Consider legal steps

In some places, deepfake porn/impersonation is illegal. Document harm and consult counsel if needed.

6) Publish a brief statement

A pinned post can inoculate your network: “This is manipulated. Please don’t share. Report it.”

First 15 minutes

If you’re overwhelmed, start here. These are “highest leverage” actions.

Lock down your accounts

Change passwords for email + social accounts. Turn on MFA. Check for new logins and recovery emails.

Create an evidence folder

One folder with screenshots + links + dates. Name files like platform_username_date.

Reduce spread

Ask 2–3 trusted people to help report. More reports, faster takedowns.

Reporting checklist

When you report, include details that help moderators act quickly.

  • Direct URL to the post, account, and any mirrors/re-uploads.
  • Your proof (screenshots + timestamps + your explanation in 2–3 sentences).
  • Category: impersonation, harassment, non-consensual intimate imagery, fraud, or doxxing.
  • Harm: reputational damage, extortion threats, workplace impact, mental distress, etc.

If the content is being re-uploaded, copy/paste the same report language and swap in the new URL each time.

Template statement

Use this if you need to address it publicly without amplifying it.

Short version (for a pinned post):

“A manipulated (AI-generated) video/image/audio of me is circulating. It is false. Please do not share it. If you see it, report it on the platform. I’m documenting and addressing this through the proper channels.”

Workplace / school version:

“I’m making you aware that a false AI-generated impersonation is circulating. I’ve documented it and filed reports. If anyone asks, please direct them to me rather than engaging or sharing.”
